Viz Media gave 'Ikki' to you and me

Viz Media has announced the creation of a site that will allow it’s users to read serialized manga on it for free. Publishers Weekly reports that Viz Media created the site as a way to introduce, and promote new properties [also to gauge their success]. Viz media is planning what much of it’s Japanese counterparts do and serialize a series and once it reaches the end of it’s first volume, said volume will be put in stores for everyone to buy! Along with volumes, translated anime, character figures, and hug pillows, will soon follow behind a successful manga. It’s just like Japan sans the constant threat of Godzilla attacks.

Ikki, comes from a Japanese magazine of the same name. The magazine itself is a seinen print magazine in Japan; published by Shogakukan; the magazine is know for it’s preferences in alternative and underground work(example Sexy Voice and Robo). The site however won’t have such an inclination to what Ikki tends to publishes, instead it’s editors will choose work that is more appropriate to introduce to the American audience. Much like Viz’s hugely successful Shonen Jump, the site will have commentary, pictures and photos, interviews, and articles. Sorry, no posters, video game demos, or Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards…yet.

So far the site is in its beta form and only has Children of the Sea available to read. The full and proper site will make it’s fabulous premiere sometime in August of ’09.

I hope this works out. The link to Viz Media's Ikki site is below in the Official site links
